Why engaging on LinkedIn matters, and how to do it well as a financial adviser

For financial advisers, engaging with other people’s content is one of the simplest (and most overlooked) ways to build visibility, credibility, and relationships without needing to create brand-new posts every day.

If you’ve ever thought, “I should probably be more active on LinkedIn… but I don’t know what to say,” this is for you.

Below, I break down why engagement matters and how to make your thoughts stand out in a crowded comment section.

So, why should financial advisers engage on LinkedIn?

1. It builds connections within your profession and with your ideal clients

LinkedIn isn’t just a content platform; it’s a conversation platform.

When you comment on posts from other advisers or people in your target audience, you’re joining conversations that already have attention.

Over time, this will build familiarity. People start recognising your name, your perspective, and your tone, which makes future conversations (and referrals) feel far more natural.

2. It increases your visibility (without posting more)

Not every adviser has time to post three or more times a week. So the good news is that comments can help fill those gaps!

Every time you leave a comment, it will show up in feeds and notifications, and may even get more visibility than the original post. This works even better when it sparks a conversation of its own.

Consistent engagement keeps you visible, even on weeks when you don’t post at all.

3. It positions you as someone worth listening to

You don’t need a long post to demonstrate expertise. A thoughtful comment can do the same job, sometimes better than a post!

When you share your insights or give a new angle on a topic, that’s what people remember. And often, it’s what leads to profile views, connection requests, and inbound messages.

What makes a LinkedIn comment actually effective

Not all comments are equally effective.

“Great post 👏” might be polite, but it won’t do much for your personal brand. It will simply sit in a sea of comments, none of which grab attention.

If you want your comments to stand out (and work harder for you), here’s a simple checklist to follow.

Your quick checklist for better comments

1. Make it personal

One of the most important things you can do when commenting is reference something specific from the post to show you’ve actually read it. For example:

“That point about clients delaying decisions really stood out. I see that a lot, too…”

2. Ask a question

If you’re not sure what to say, ask something that keeps the conversation going.

It could be:

  • Clarifying: “How do you usually approach that with clients?”
  • Curious: “Have you seen that change recently?”

You can also add a question to your own insights to strengthen your comment further.

Using our previous example: “That point about clients delaying decisions really stood out. I see that a lot, too. How do you approach clients who typically struggle with making big decisions?”

Questions invite replies, and replies increase visibility!

3. Add a takeaway

Don’t just agree with what the post is saying; build on the idea with your own thoughts and feelings!

Share a quick insight, example, or perspective that adds value to the conversation.

4. Show some personality

You’re not writing a report here – you’re looking to network and get to know new people!

A bit of humour, warmth, or honesty goes a long way in making your comment feel human and memorable. Plus, it’s how you’ll build connections with new people who could become clients.

5. Aim for 12 words or more

Short comments can get lost and often don’t provide much value. As a rule, aim for 12 or more words in your comment, so it has a better chance of being seen and creating a conversation.

Final thoughts

Engaging on LinkedIn is a great way to show up, become part of conversations, and make new connections that can be valuable for your business.

You don’t need to say something clever on every post; simply show up, start creating new conversations, and watch those new connections roll in.

Trust us – over time, those small interactions really do make an impact.
