Not sure what to post? A quarterly social media guide for financial advisers

December is one of the best months for social media, in my opinion.

There’s plenty to talk about, and it’s mainly fun: Christmas parties, office decorations, and end-of-year round-ups.

January is usually similar, with “happy new year” messages, new year’s resolutions, and planning for the year ahead.

February, however, can feel a bit harder once the excitement has worn off.

If you find yourself staring at a blank screen wondering what to post next, you’re not on your own.

Here are a few simple content ideas for each quarter to help take the pressure off planning your social media.

Q1 – January to March

Tax year end

Tax year end is one of the biggest focus areas of the first quarter, and it gives you plenty of opportunities to share useful, timely content.

You could post about:

  • The importance of reviewing finances before 5 April
  • The allowances that reset each year
  • Common questions you’re hearing from clients.

Valentine’s Day and planning as a couple

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to mean red hearts and roses on your social media.

For financial advisers, it’s a good opportunity to talk about planning as a couple and the importance of having open conversations about money.

You could post about:

  • Planning together for future goals
  • Why couples should talk about their finances
  • Common money conversations couples avoid.

Spring Statement

You don’t need to comment on everything in the Spring Statement straight away; a simple acknowledgement will do.

You could post about:

  • The key points from the Spring Statement, once the information is clear
  • The fact that the Spring Statement has been announced
  • How and when you’ll contact clients if anything affects them.

Q2 – April to June

The new tax year

After the rush of tax year end, this is a calmer time to encourage people to look ahead rather than scramble at the last minute.

You could post about:

  • Allowances that have refreshed
  • What a new tax year means for your finances
  • Why early planning can make things feel less stressful.

Wedding planning and finances

Spring and early summer are popular times for weddings, which makes it a good opportunity to talk about planning together, setting expectations, and starting life together financially.

You could post about:

  • Planning for shared goals
  • Combining finances and things to consider
  • Money conversations couples should have before getting married

Q3 – July to September

Helping children head off to university

Late summer is a big moment for families, especially those with children heading off to university for the first time, and it’s a good opportunity to share supportive, practical content that helps parents feel a bit more prepared.

You could post about:

  • Helping young adults build good money habits
  • Common costs parents don’t always think about
  • Conversations worth having before they leave home

Holidays and budgeting

Summer holidays are something many people look forward to, but they can also be expensive, so this is a good chance to talk about budgeting.

You could post about:

  • Planning ahead for holiday spending
  • Enjoying time away without financial stress
  • Setting a budget that still allows you to enjoy yourself

Q4 – October to December

Autumn Budget

The Autumn Budget is one of the main talking points towards the end of the year, and, as with the Spring Statement, you don’t need to comment on everything straight away. A calm, considered approach works best.

You could post about:

  • The fact that you’re reviewing the details
  • The key points, once things are clearer
  • When clients can expect to hear from you if anything affects them.

Christmas and end-of-year content

The run-up to Christmas is one of the best times of the year to create content; there’s plenty to talk about, and it’s often more relaxed than other times of the year.

You could post about:

  • End-of-year round-ups
  • Christmas opening hours
  • Office decorations or team celebrations.
