5 tips Taylor Swift can teach you about becoming a marketing mastermind

Whether you’re a lover of Taylor Swift’s music or not, you have to admit that she knows how to get the whole world listening.

In fact, by the time the Eras Tour ended in December 2024, she smashed records by being the first person to reach billionaire status with her music alone. That included having the highest-grossing concert film of all time, and the first music tour to ever earn more than $2 billion.

With her newest album, The Life of a Showgirl, set to release on 3 October, her marketing machine is back in full swing.

Read on to discover five tips Taylor can teach you to help you become a marketing mastermind.

1. ‘Blank Space’ – Choose the right platform for your business

Making sure you use the right channels for your business is crucial.

For example, one of the first places Taylor revealed news about The Life of a Showgirl was on New Heights, a sports podcast hosted by her fiancé, Travis Kelce, and his brother.

According to Guinness World Records, that episode of New Heights has now earned the title of “most concurrent views for a podcast” on YouTube, with 1.3 million people tuning in at once.

Put yourself in your audience’s shoes and ask where they are spending their time, and where they might go to find content like yours.

Different platforms serve different purposes, too. Newsletters are great for keeping in touch with clients who already know and trust you, while social media sites like LinkedIn can be a powerful way to find new clients and build connections.

2. ‘…Ready For It?’Build anticipation

Before announcing an album, Taylor loves to drop cryptic clues and Easter eggs, fuelling theories and fan conversations long before the official reveal.

For The Life of a Showgirl, her marketing team, Taylor Nation, started the rumours by sharing 12 pictures of Taylor in orange outfits from the Eras Tour with the caption: “Thinking about when she said, ‘See you next era’”.

Whenever you post on social media, consider teasing your followers into reading more of your content. Revealing snippets of a blog could convince people to read the whole thing on your website, or teasing a collaboration with another professional could make people even more excited to sign up for your webinar.

3. ‘Gorgeous’Create distinct branding

Aesthetics are more important than we like to admit.

Each of Taylor’s albums has a distinct mood and visual aesthetic that sets them apart from the rest. While The Life of a Showgirl is all orange sparkles, her previous album, The Tortured Poets Department, was slow and melancholy, with a matching black-and-white theme.

Your brand should do the same. Clear, consistent branding helps people recognise you and your business straight away, no matter what platform you’re on.

Whether it’s through colours, slogans, or your logo, make sure your branding reflects your speciality so clients know why they might want to work with you at a glance.

4. ‘ME!’Don’t be afraid to get personal

When you’re sharing information about your business online, you might fall into the trap of feeling like you need to sound completely formal all the time.

While your tone is a personal preference, opening up to your audience can help you connect to potential clients and remind them you are a real person behind the screen.

In the New Heights podcast episode, Taylor shared some of the behind-the-scenes process of recording The Life of a Showgirl. That included the inspiration behind her songs and the chaotic story of how she flew to Sweden to record the album between tour dates on the European leg of the Eras Tour.

It’s important to remember that people connect with people. That’s why you’ll often find that social media posts sharing personal anecdotes about how you overcame a common struggle or the reasons why you chose your career path can be very successful.

5. ‘You Belong With Me’Engage with your audience

Taylor shares subtle clues about her upcoming announcements through her shows and social media posts, encouraging fans to constantly comb through footage of her and theorise about what could be next for the pop star. This method keeps her in the public’s mind.

Although you might not have millions of people dissecting every Instagram caption, it’s still crucial to engage with other people on social media.

Following and connecting with other people in your profession and commenting with thoughtful messages encourages them to do the same to you. That way, you boost engagement on your posts and potentially show your content to new clients.
